The ‘Gold Standard’ in tinnitus and hyperacusis reduction

The reality is that there is no gold standard for the treatment of tinnitus. The reason behind it is the variability of the clinical presentations from patient to patient and the individual reactions to their tinnitus. At times, there are several factors affecting and impacting your perception of sounds when there are not sounds present and all these, makes every patient unique. What we do know is that often, emotional and/or psychological stress is either a precursor or a resultant of tinnitus. However, the good news is that there are ways to manage it and you have got here because having had an audiological evaluation, our programme has been recommended/prescribed to you.

The Audiology Clinic developed the Mindfulness Based Tinnitus Intervention (MBTI™), a one on one four-week tinnitus management programme aimed at tinnitus patients, which combines Clinical Audiology and Mindfulness.

The programme is based on the original eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR™) programme designed and developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (Center for Mindfulness - Oasis Institute - by Jon Kabat-Zinn) and combined with 23 years of clinical audiology work, research and development undertaken at the Royal Throat Nose and Ear Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital by The Audiology Clinic's Director Raúl Garcia-Medina.

Introduction

The programme is designed to equip participants with clinical knowledge and understanding, mental solutions, tools and compassionate self-awareness so they can manage their reaction to tinnitus and/or hyperacusis, in tandem with diagnostics and when required, medical provision, to emerge from the difficulties of living with hearing conditions and their symptoms with dignity, strength and resolve.

Structure and Certification 

MBTI™ takes sixteen weeks from start to finish and results in certification under the CFM (Centre for Mindfulness) MBSR™ pathway and a full audiological prescription and treatment programme unique to you.
